The Cumbria County men’s golf team was ranked third in the country.

The team achieved the feat at the England Golf County National Finals at Whittington Health Golf Club.

The final, which took place from September 27-29, saw the best county teams from across the country compete.

Cumbria secured one of four places in the final after winning the Northern Counties ‘Big Six’ tournament at Ulverston Golf Club in August.

It was the first time in over 15 years that the team had won the Northern Region qualifiers, beating Lancashire, Yorkshire, Cheshire, Durham, Isle of Man and Northumberland.

The seven-strong Cumbrian team took on Essex, Gloucestershire and Lincolnshire in the final tournament.

After two halved matches against Essex and Gloucestershire, Cumbria finished third in the country.

Captain Simon Young said: “Finishing third in England is a fantastic achievement for a country like ours.

“Our players put Cumbrian golf on the map this weekend and showed we can compete with the best.”

More than 50 supporters made the three-hour journey to watch the team compete at the Litchfield-based club.

Kieran Waters, Cumbria County Champion 2024/25, said: “As a proud Cumbrian, it’s always an absolute honor to represent your county, but to do it on the national stage is something else entirely.

“Even though we were hoping to win the trophy at the start of the week, we are thrilled to finish third in the country.”

This achievement sets a benchmark for the future of golf in Cumbria, inspiring young golfers across the county.

Andrew Pickering, Cumbria Head Coach and PGA Professional at Penrith Golf Hub, said: “Finishing third in England is a monumental achievement for Cumbria, and it is testament to what can be achieved with the right support and investment. “

“This success lays a strong foundation for the future of Cumbrian golf.

“The future of golf here is bright, and this is just the beginning.”
